Defensive Walls

Flood Guard Systems Ltd’s design team can design a flood defensive wall to in one of five ways depending on the conditions and the performance required.

Defensive walls can be aesthetically designed to create flood resistant barriers around the building. Or to guide water away from sensitive areas to areas that will suffer less damage by flooding. Access will be required so either the wall is designed to allow wheelchair access via a raised pathway at the front and rear of the wall or the use of a BSI kite-marked flood products or engineered equivalent is required. Retention basins may also need to be incorporated into the design to store the volume of surface water run-off being kept from the building. Substantial groundwork may be involved.

Any work when building exterior walls to make them more flood resistant will require good quality workmanship to prepare the wall so that any resistance measure is effectively sealed. This technique is relatively new as a flood resistance measure, but extra care is need to ensure suitable water resistant materials are used and that they are applied appropriately and effectively.

The main types of defensive wall are:

The Brick Wall consists of two courses of engineering bricks with foundations. This gives good protection where flow rates, depths and volumes of water are low.

The Re-enforced brick wall comes in the form of the same two courses of engineered brick facing, the cavity between the courses will be in filled with concrete giving a more substantial mass to the wall.

The Block Wall, this incorporates concrete blocks instead of the engineering bricks, with re-bar re-enforcement of the cavity with the additional concrete pour.

The Fast Wall. This consists of preformed concrete wall pieces. Ground works will be carried out to give the pre-formed concrete blocks the correct footing to allow it to do its job properly.

Gabian Walls This is more of an industrial solution to the problem of building protective walls. Gabian walls usually consist of large interlocking metal "Gabian" baskets. These are filled with material that will give the wall a substantive mass, something like rocks or concrete blocks can be used.

Earth Embankments Text

Flood Guard Systems Ltd can build earth embankments and bund walls to help protect areas and keep water out or under different circumstances these embankments and walls can be used as containing walls, bunds or banks. Whatever the application FGSL’s design engineers will ensure the greatest protection for any given site.

A conventional earth embankment may provide an effective flood defence around a building if practical and acceptable to the planning authority. There may be a need to provide pumping arrangements to remove potential rainwater or floodwater seepage. Access will be required so either the bund is designed to allow wheelchair access via a raised pathway at the front and rear of the bund or the use of a BSI kite-marked flood products or engineered equivalent is required. Embankments will require expert engineering design to ensure breaching will not occur, there is no risk of overtopping or risk will be increased elsewhere as a consequence. Detention basins may also need to be incorporated into the design to store the volume of surface water run-off being kept from the building. Substantial groundwork may be involved.
