Sustainable Drainage SUDS
Floodguards Systems Ltd currently offer innovative techniques involving Sustainable Drainage
Systems (SUDS) that have allowed prestigious re-developments of run down inner cities to gain
planning approval via PPS25, that would have not normally been granted. We can design and
install a custom SUDS system that will not only help with flood mitigation but also be
environmentally friendly, when used in conjunction with other sustainable measures a realistic
33% reduction in domestic drinking water consumption could be achieved.
When selecting SUDS it is important to consider quality, quantity and amenity design criteria
equally. There will not be a single "correct" answer: several options may meet the design
criteria, and judgment will be needed.
Selection and design of SUDS are multi-disciplinary processes. Unlike conventional drainage
systems, factors that influence the final choice will include planning, water quality, water
resource, architectural and landscape requirements.
SUDS techniques available for consideration are:
- Porous paving
- Permeable paving
- Retention basins & Ponds
- Water Butts
- Green roofs
- Filter strips & Swales
SUDS aim to reduce the amount and rate of water flow by a combination of:
Infiltration into the ground;
Holding water in storage areas; and
Slowing down the movement of water
